Throughout the year, Zoetic Mindfulness Retreat will host a series of six loosely guided Dark Retreats, each exploring a different theme and perspective into the experience of darkness as a doorway to deep meditative experiences.

What happens in the dark happens quickly.

The Wimberley Valley is recognized as an International Dark Sky Community, and we intentionally hold these retreats on or near the new moon when the night is at its darkest. In a culture filled with constant light, noise, and stimulation, true darkness has become a rare experience.

For thousands of years, human beings have entered darkness as a form of pilgrimage, initiation, and contemplative practice. Long before meditation halls and retreat centers, people sought out caves, forests, deserts, and the night itself as places of reflection, transformation, and direct encounter with the unfolding of the experience of reality.

No Substances Necessary.

By stepping into darkness consciously, we participate in an ancient tradition while creating the conditions for deep rest, meditation, insight, creativity, and renewal. As darkness falls and the visible world recedes, attention naturally begins to turn inward. The body softens. The mind opens. Our Awareness becomes receptive.

The darkness is not the destination. It is the doorway and what lies beyond that doorway is different for everyone. Once we put our masks on we will be alone, but we will be alone…together. The support of other sincere seekers if felt even when the words fall away.

Each Dark Retreat shares a common structure while offering a unique focus. Some retreats explore creativity or awareness, self and not-self. Others center on deep rest, the imagination, the subconscious, or the relationship between sound and silence. Each retreat is guided, but the experience itself remains deeply personal. No two journeys are ever the same.

What happens in the dark happens quickly.

The evening begins with an opening ceremony and a period of preparation. Together, we gradually set aside the distractions and momentum of daily life and prepare to enter the darkness. We will be held by total darkness for ninety minutes and emerge at rivers edge to behold the setting sun, drink tea, & ease back into seeing.

My relationship to the dark and to meditation completely changed after I began to explore darkness meditation practice.

Participants then spend approximately ninety minutes in complete darkness, guided by meditation, sound, and silence. Throughout the experience, sound serves as an anchor and companion, helping to support relaxation, awareness, and exploration. There is nothing to achieve and no particular experience you are expected to have. Some participants encounter vivid imagery, memories, insights, emotions, energetic movement, or profound stillness. Others discover the rare gift of deep rest. You are the master of your experience and only you know what you need. The darkness will give you only what you are ready for. You already know, the darkness just helps you to remember.

As the evening draws to a close, we gather at the river’s edge for a closing ceremony at sunset. Emerging from darkness together, we allow the vivid colors of the sky, the sounds of the river, and the presence of one another to gently welcome us back into the visible world.

Following the ceremony, participants are invited to enjoy nourishing snacks and quiet conversation as the experience settles. You will be surprised at how hungry you are after the journey.

Darkness meditation is both simple and profound. By temporarily removing visual stimulation, we create an opportunity to experience ourselves and the world in a different way. What emerges in the darkness can be surprising, revealing, peaceful, and deeply personal.

Each retreat offers a different lens through which to explore the nature of conciseness with the great teacher of eternity, darkness.

The experience is many things.
